Ed's Story
The Journey of Faith
Ed has always found comfort in listening to where God is leading him. He has been fortunate to attend many churches throughout his life – both with his parents, siblings, and extended family, as well as his wife and children. This journey of faith ultimately led him here to Good Shepherd.
Born in Cuba, Ed’s father was Chinese and his mother was half Cuban and half Chinese. He and his two brothers were raised in the Catholic faith. When he was young, his family moved from Cuba to Puerto Rico. After a few years, with the help of the Catholic Church, his family, along with his aunt, moved to Cleveland and became integrated in American life. Ed learned English from watching tv and hanging out with his neighborhood friends. As his family settled into middle class life in America, his father found work in international banking and his mother became a secretary.
Ed and his brothers attended college, and it was there Ed met his future wife, Robin, at their college radio station. Ed still practiced his Catholic faith, but after he and Robin married, they started attending her Lutheran church and alternated with Catholic Mass. As their three children grew, they felt they needed to settle on one main church. The Lutheran church they were attending felt very personal and intimate so they continued worshiping there. After moving to New Jersey, a neighbor invited them to their Presbyterian church. Ed’s family loved the feeling of that church and stayed until they moved to Kentucky three years later. In both Kentucky, and later in Iowa, they attended Lutheran churches. They felt a connection to the pastors of those congregations and all three of their children were confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
After moving to St. Louis, they found Good Shepherd and fell in love with the youth program. They started to meet people and become involved. As their children grew in their faith, Ed became a youth mentor. He then became involved in “Our City, Our Neighbors” and is currently serving as Good Shepherd’s Council President.
Throughout his life, the church has been a comfort for Ed and his family – it has been a place to meet others, strengthen their faith, and be active in the congregation. He loves the energy of the people at Good Shepherd and values the many programs we offer and the dedication of our pastors.
The congregation is blessed to have leaders like Ed who serve in rolls as they feel called to. If you’d like to learn more about how to join a program or serve on a committee, please reach out to one of our pastors.
