One of the projects that Don was instrumental in at Good Shepherd was placing the cross up at the top of the hill. One might think this is a simple task, but there is quite a story behind the project.
The cross you see today was originally part of the church building. During one of the expansions, rather than discarding the old cross, some folks had a bigger vision. The idea of placing a large cross, up on the hill to be lit up at night and prominently visible to the community was born.
Don was instrumental as he utilized his engineering background and knowledge from the firm where he had worked to solve a significant challenge. “We had to figure out how to make steel to go inside the aluminum cross to keep it from blowing over in strong winds,” Don shares. “It was hollow on the inside and we had to find a way to anchor and strengthen it.”
Eventually, the project was successfully completed and today the beautiful cross can be seen, solidly rooted in the ground, anchored in concrete, and lit up throughout the night.
In the same way, our relationships and connections keep us anchored in our community of faith, and rooted in Jesus Christ so that whatever challenges may come throughout our lives, we can endure by the strength of the Holy Spirit within us.
Thanks to the generosity and commitment of those that have gone before us and all of you today, Good Shepherd continues to have a vibrant presence in the community, and wonderful facilities for mission and ministry.
